Prof.dr. D.E.F. Henley
Dr. David Henley is Professor of Contemporary Indonesia Studies at Leiden University. He has published on a broad range of topics in relation to Southeast Asia, including ethnicity and nationalism, environmental history, economic development and finance, political institutions and ideology, and cultures of the human body.
In his keynote speech in ICSAS 2023, Dr. Henley distinguishes Southeast Asia as a distinct cultural region among academics and Southeast Asians themselves and puts focus on shared cultural traits, particularly in cuisine, music, art, kinship, spirituality, and social solidarity

Culture in Southeast Asian regional identity
A reality check and research challenge for Southeast Asianists
Scholars of Southeast Asia have an ironic tendency to question the reality of Southeast Asia as a distinct region of any kind, and in particular as a cultural region. But while academics in their ivory towers have doubted, Southeast Asians in their streets and villages have become increasingly sure that Southeast Asia does exist, and are increasingly inclined to identify with it. Part of the emerging 'ASEAN identity' is forward-looking, aspirational, and practical, concerned with promoting peace and economic development among the member states of Southeast Asia's well-known regional association of nations. However, opinion polls and attitude surveys among Southeast Asians indicate that a majority of them also believe that cultural similarities and shared traditions already exist, inherited rather than constructed, among the peoples of the region. Even official materials relating to the 'ASEAN socio-cultural community' (one of the three 'pillars' of ASEAN, the others being the economic and 'political-security' communities), although typically headlined by clichés about tolerance and 'unity in diversity', mention concrete cultural commonalities in the areas of cuisine, music, and art, as well as hinting at shared values in the realms of kinship, spirituality, and social solidarity. In this presentation I will argue that Southeast Asianists should stop assuming that such shared cultural traits exist only in their own panoramic imagination, if at all. Instead they should start asking Southeast Asians at large, who increasingly have travelled both inside and outside the region, what the shared Southeast Asian features are, and how important. In this way they can ground their scholarship firmly in the reality of the region they study, and create a new research agenda of practical relevance. My presentation concludes by suggesting two important cultural domains in which people from different parts of Southeast Asia are likely to recognize, and appreciate, shared sensibilities: (1) food, cuisine, and food culture; (2) body language, body cultures, and bodily appearance.
